Probably never. People may ask you how you feel or how is your headache or how is your leg doing, but they never ask about your body’s chemistry. Yet that may be the most important factor in your life and health. They do not ask because you cannot not tell them, and you cannot tell them because you just do not know. In fact, no one can really know what their body chemistry should be. You see everyone is different and only your body knows what your own chemistry should be. What is your normal blood sugar, histamine level, adrenaline, cortisone, and serotonin level at this very moment. You don’t know, you can’t know nor can you know what it should be. No one does and there are thousands of other chemicals which are vital to your life and health. Science is not even able to guess what is the average for many of these chemicals, let alone what is normal for any particular person. There are, more than likely, some that have not even been discovered yet. Everyone’s body chemistry is different and everyone reacts differently to changes in body chemistry.

You need look no further than your local bar to prove this point. The consumption of alcohol changes your body chemistry and changes in your body chemistry effect how you react and perform. When some people drink alcohol, changes in their body chemistry makes them belligerent, while others may become mellow. Some become withdrawn, others are the life of a party. Some become somber, almost morose and others laugh and have a good time. Some get sick or have a hangover the next day and others seem to experience no after effects. One thing we do know about alcohol, it effects your judgment, your reflexes, your reaction time and your eye-hand coordination. That is why the law will not allow you to drive a motor vehicle when your blood alcohol level reaches a certain point. But who established that point? Like every chemical, and alcohol is a chemical, the proper level is probably different for everyone. Some people, well within the legal limits for blood alcohol, may still be functioning so poorly that driving an automobile could be fatal. This is but one chemical. There are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of chemicals in the body all of which affect your body’s performance in one way or another.

There is another aspect of body chemistry that is important to your chiropractor. You see the millions of glands and cells that produce all the chemicals in your body are controlled by the nerve system. You cannot perform any function in life without the production of chemicals. Everything from laughing to sleeping, to digesting food depends upon the production of chemicals and doing those things at your best depends upon having just the right chemicals produced in just the right amounts. If there is an interference in your nerve system due to what chiropractors call a vertebral subluxation, then your body chemistry is going to be altered and your body will not work as it should. Chiropractors do not know what your body chemistry should be. As we said before, no one but the inner wisdom of your body knows what your body chemistry should be, what chemicals need to be produced, when they are needed and in what amounts.

But one thing your chiropractor does know. He or she knows when there is a vertebra out of place in your spine, when there is interference in your nerve system that is altering the message from the brain to the millions of little chemical factories in your body and upsetting your body chemistry. What is more, the chiropractor can correct that nerve-interfering subluxation quickly and efficiently so that your body has the greatest opportunity of normalizing your body chemistry and keeping it normal. Regular visits to your chiropractor are vital to every aspect of your life and your health, including your body chemistry.Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-68080596448861644372011-07-18T16:21:00.001-07:002011-07-18T16:22:13.473-07:00What do ChiropracTORS do?It is important to us that you not only understand what we are doing for you at this chiropractic office but why we are doing it. One of the biggest reasons why people do not refer others for care is because they are not exactly sure what we do. Either they misunderstand or they are simply unable to communicate it. The basic principles of chiropractic are actually quite simple, so simple in fact, that anyone should be able to explain them to family, friends and associates.

A few of the basic concepts taught to chiropractic students in Philosophy 101 are so important that everyone under chiropractic care should have an understanding of them. One such concept is called the “Safety Pin Cycle.” This is a simple illustration of how the body works (note its resemblance to its name). The brain sends out messages to all of the cells of the body (i.e., tissue cells) via the efferent (EFF) pathway (that is the part of the nervous system that carries messages leaving the brain). The cells report back to the brain about their condition and needs via the afferent (AFF) pathway. In this way, the brain controls all of the functions of our bodies. While this drawing is not exactly physiologically or anatomically correct, it is adequate to describe the transmission of the nervous impulse throughout the body.

If there is an interference in this communication, it reduces the body’s ability to act and react. The tissue cell cannot remain in perfect organization if there is an alteration in the communication in the efferent system. This is exactly what occurs in the case of a subluxation. Misalignment of one of the bones of the spine can interfere with and alter the message from the brain to the cells of the body. This ultimately changes the function of the cells, and over time, the condition of the entire body.

Of course, we would not expect that our patients would discuss efferent and afferent pathways with their friends and family, but they could describe what a chiropractor does in a fashion similar to the following:
“It’s important for everyone to be under chiropractic care because small misalignments in the bones of the spine can cause interference in the nervous system and keep your body from working as effectively as it should or could. Everyone knows that the brain controls the entire functioning of the body. It does this by sending messages from the brain down the spinal cord and out along all of the nerves to every cell in your body. Spinal misalignments can interfere with this communication and keep your body from working the way it should.”

It is important to share what you know about chiropractic with the people around you so their bodies can work as effectively as possible. You do not need to give them some lengthy, technical explanation about how the nervous system works, just that the body will always work better without interference. That’s not only what chiropractors do but why they do it.Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-6424532170291386102011-07-18T14:47:00.000-07:002011-07-18T14:53:03.643-07:00Understanding What We DoOne of the major differences between the practice of chiropractic and that of a therapeutic approach such as medicine is the desire to have knowledgeable, understanding patients. The physician often neither wants nor cares for the patient to know everything that he is doing. This is not a criticism, it just reflects the two different approaches. It is not necessary for the patient to understand the medical approach. They are totally uninvolved with the process. The patient does not participate in the surgery, he or she just lies there. The patient merely swallows the medication. Everything is done by the doctor. The practice of medicine is performed on the patient or done for the patient.

Chiropractic is different.

Chiropractic is based upon the principle that the patient’s body does the healing. It maintains health and it actually makes the adjustment, using the force introduced into the spine by the chiropractor’s hands. Second, chiropractic is directed toward health and increasing one’s potential for an improved quality of life in all areas. Obviously, this takes cooperation on the part of the patient. We will adjust you so that you can get the maximum benefit from your exercise. But you still must do the exercise. We correct your subluxations so that your body, free of nerve interference, can get the maximum benefit from the food you eat. But we cannot eat the food for you. Chiropractic care is a cooperative effort, from the actual adjustment to the patient taking responsibility for being regular in his or her care.
The medical doctor thinks he is smarter than his patients so the patients should just do as they are told. The chiropractor works with your body’s innate intelligence which is smarter than all the chiropractors and medical doctors in the world put together. As a result, it is the chiropractor’s desire that you, the patient, learn more and more about the chiropractic way of life so that you can take a more active role in maintaining your health and directing your life and the chiropractor can step back and do the one thing he or she does best, which is correcting these subluxations whenever they occur.

To be a participant in chiropractic, it is imperative that you, the patient, understand as much as you can about chiropractic and the “above-down, inside-out” approach to health care. If this term is unfamiliar to you, please ask your chiropractor to explain its meaning. You see, we believe that people truly want to be knowledgeable about their life and health and not just be a bystander to what’s being done to them. We believe that you can see by now that the therapeutic approach has made us a drug-dependent, disease-fearful society and while it may have limited success in the treatment of disease, it has very little to do with health.Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-74447253905247310712011-07-12T21:45:00.000-07:002011-07-12T22:20:09.589-07:00Amazon Addiction

Hello, My name is Rachel and I have an Amazon addiction.

Ok, so I am a nursing mom...which MEANS I have ALOT of 10-15 minute intervals during the day to browse the internet, update facebook, etc while nursing my son. This has become a bit of a problem for my checkbook. Amazon has become one of my go to's while nursing which means about every 2-3 days I have a (surprise) new package waiting for me at my doorstep. I LOVE getting things in the mail so most of the time this is a good thing.

Here's a list of a few things I've purchased in the past 2 months. Cloth diapers, baby legs, a Zoku popsicle maker...which is AMAZING by the way- it can make popsicles in 7 minutes!!, a popsicle recipe book ICE POP JOY for said popsicle maker, a dehydrator, a mandelin to cut things up for my dehydrator, and wait for it...the most recent purchase...a 15 ft 48in deep above ground pool with a salt water filter for the backyard. Hmmmm just listing all of those items makes me want to jump back on Amazon to see what other goodies I can find.

I know, I have a problem but I keep thinking about all the fun my son (4 months old) and I are going to have using all of these treats when he's a little older. I think I'm going to take a little break from Amazon for a while and enjoy all of my recent purchases...especially the pool once it comes in and we can set it up.

If you're a nursing mom, what do you find yourself doing during your sessions?Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-14661491620500376872011-05-02T11:43:00.000-07:002011-05-02T11:46:44.946-07:00Addox Cotton Whaley's Birth StoryYour “due date” (which you couldn’t have possibly known, so I wasn’t holding you accountable to it) was March 16th, 2011. It just so happens that my very first contractions started that morning at 6am. Now I hadn’t had any Braxton Hicks up to this point so I was pretty sure this was the start of my “practice labor,” so I wasn’t getting all too excited about anything yet…I stayed in bed and for the next 3 hours the contractions were steady at 10 minutes apart. At 9 I wake up because I was still working at this point (my plan was to work thru til that Saturday the 19th then stop) and start to get ready for work…the contractions start to space out to about 20 minutes so that tells me my thoughts that it wasn’t true labor yet were accurate.
So, I go into work and throughout the day have a few contractions in which I have to ask the client I’m working on to give me a sec, but nothing unbearable at this point. I go home for lunch to take a nap and when I wake up to use the restroom I see I have lost my mucous plug…this is good news- everything is moving forward- I’m one step closer to meeting you! I go back to work and decide to send the maternity leave email I had prepared out telling everyone I would be taking the rest of the week off. I finish out my work day and Daddy and I decide to go to church because I didn’t want to just sit around and wait for things to start- I wanted to be DOING things. At church we were timing my contractions on an app on the Iphone and they were varying from 6-10 minutes apart which is the closest they’ve been up to this point. We go home and go to bed and then the fun starts…
Like a good ole Cinderella story- the contractions start picking up at midnight and are getting more intense and closer together. (about every 5 minutes) I try to sleep thru them because I know you and I are going to be working really hard here soon and I want to be well rested, but by 2:30am I can’t sleep. I decide to get into the bathtub to make sure this is the real thing and see if things slow down or stay the same. The noise of the tub woke your Daddy up and he came to check on me...after relaying to him I think this is the real thing he decides to stay up in case I need him. We called my doula Jamie Hinton and my midwife Donnellyn Dominguez to let them know things had started and that we’d keep in touch with them as we progressed.
I stayed in the tub for awhile, while Daddy starts getting things prepared for the birth. Every contraction he would come in and rub my feet or hands to help distract me from the contraction. Once he was done setting up everything for the birth he wanders into the kitchen. A little while later I start smelling this awful smell making its way back to me…I yell at him and ask what could he possibly be doing at 3am to be making that smell?! Well, your Daddy was playing true to form and since he can’t just sit around and do NOTHING he decided to make all the chicken breasts we had in the fridge…NOT something a laboring mom wants to smell for the record. So what do I do?! I proceed to throw up in the trash can while in the tub. Nice! I usually hate throwing up but often times when a laboring mom throws up she dilates a centimeter- so in my head I’m like BRING IT ON!! He finishes cooking and I decide to get out of the tub and try some different positions. I walk around for a bit, get on my hands and knees, try the birth ball, etc. I decided I liked to be on my hands and knees. I’m drinking a lot of water and juice and ate an apple and about 10-15 minutes later my stomach decides it doesn’t need any food or juice for energy and you guessed it- I throw up again! (This happens one more time before Jamie gets here) At about 5:30am Aaron asks if I want him to call Jamie yet, I felt okay at that point but she lives about an hour away and so I told him to go ahead and call her because I would probably need her soon.
All throughout my pregnancy I saw myself switching from the toilet to the shower during contractions…I don’t know why this is what I pictured but I ended up liking to be on the toilet a lot too…it probably has something to do with the fact that at the end of my pregnancy I was peeing every 5 minutes or so, so it was like a second home to me and I was comfortable there. That’s where Jamie finds me when she gets to the house. My contractions are ranging from 2-5 minutes apart and lasting from 45 seconds to 1 minute and 15 seconds. I start wanting counter pressure and massage on my low back and sacrum area every contraction. Your Daddy and Jamie were there for me every time and helped me get thru each contraction as they came.
At some point I decide I want some soup but we don’t have any in the house and I also realize I haven’t gotten the food for the midwife team yet so I have Aaron go up and get me some chicken noodle soup, and get a fruit and veggie tray and some other finger foods for the birth team. He comes home and makes me the soup and after 2 bites I’m tasting pure salt (no offense babe but that was the worst chicken noodle soup ever!) and so my stomach rebels once again and up it comes. I’m getting pretty efficient at puking in a trash can by this point.
I’m not really aware of the time at this point and am moving around the living room for awhile…I end up back on the toilet and I hear a lot of noise coming from the front. I guess Jamie had called in my birth team a while back and all of them arrived at the exact same time. So I make my way up front to say hello to Donnellyn, Sue and Melissa (her assistants), Cindy and her 3 month old Ellington, (my chiropractic friend) and Lynsey Stone (my birth photographer).
I believe it’s about noon at this point and Donnellyn asks how I’ve been doing…we’ve told her about me throwing up 5 times and let her watch me contract for a while. Cindy sets me up on the couch to adjust me and of course I can’t just be a laboring mom- the doctor in me is telling her to check the left side of my sacrum and make sure she gets my round ligaments because they’re bothering me a bit- then I proceed to ask if my sacrum is bulging yet to try to get an idea of how far I’m progressed. Sometimes Chiropractors make the worst patients. My body didn’t like laying on my side so after the adjustment I reach for the trash can again and unsubluxate my stomach. Hey, by this point I’m at least 6cm judging by how many times I’ve thrown up if there’s any truth to the vomiting bit!!
Your daddy had filled up the birth pool sometime earlier and I had been getting in and out of that for awhile. I was in the birth pool when Donnellyn comes in and asks to check how far I’m dilated. I really didn’t want her to check me because I didn’t want to be disappointed if I wasn’t as far along as I THOUGHT I felt. But she convinced me to let her and she just wouldn’t tell me. So I get out of the pool and into the bed and she goes about her business checking me but we have to stop because I start having a contraction in the middle of the process. She gets back to it and when she’s done I hop back in the pool and continue with laboring. About 10-15 minutes go by (I think that’s accurate- I really have no clue at this point but I know it hasn’t been long) I feel like I’m in transition. I’ve been grunting and my moaning is getting deeper and longer and I feel like I have the shakes. So in my head I’m thinking sweet! Since I’m having these thoughts I decide to ask Donnellyn if my dilation was good, something I’d be happy with. She smiles and says “Oh yes sweetie, it’s really good.” So I’m thinking I’m at a 9 or complete so I ask her to tell me.
She says I’m at a 7 almost an 8 and I’ve got to admit I was a little disappointed but I’ve known births to go from an 8 to a 10 in 10 minutes so I didn’t let it get me upset. Little did I know, YOU weren’t ready to come out in 10 minutes….I’ve dozed off a couple of times between contractions the next couple hours and am still not pushing. A couple of times when I dozed off my face fell into the water and I remember looking around to see if anyone saw and was laughing at me. The things I worried about were funny looking back now. About 2 and a half to 3 hours later Donnellyn wanted me to get out of the pool and let gravity do a little work and try some different positions. They strapped a diaper on me and we went into the living room…No sooner did I get in there I drop to my hands and knees and have a contraction. After the contraction was over I turn and look over my shoulder and say “I’m going to need another diaper…” Yes I know you will probably laugh and make fun of me when you’re older but I messed my diaper while giving birth to you. As a matter of fact that wasn’t the only time someone from my midwife team had to clean up after me…later in the birth pool the fish net pooper scooper had to be used several times…I’m only telling you this to give this some comedic value and let you know birthing you had its funny parts too.
Back to the labor. I hang from your Daddy for a few contractions, then climb about 4 stairs a few times and then resort back to old faithful and get back on my hands and knees. Cindy was a dear and went and got me some non salty chicken noodle soup and I had a few bites of that before she adjusted me again. After the last adjustment Donnellyn wanted to check me again because she thought I might be complete because for the past few contractions I’ve been involuntarily bearing down and pushing and she wanted to make sure there was no cervical lip or something in the way. So I lay down in the middle of the living room floor and get checked for the 2nd time to hear Donnellyn say “Alright sweetie you’re at a 10 and complete! We can go start pushing whenever you’re ready!”
In my head I’m thinking “Sweet, lets get this party started.” I also couldn’t wait to get back in the pool…it was sooo much better than being outside of it having contractions. It’s about 4:55 or 5pm at this point and we head back to the bedroom. I hop in the pool and when I feel the urge to push I go for it. I ask Donnellyn to put counter pressure on my perineum, which she does every contraction. She tells me to take a deep breath and push while holding my breath and then another quick breath and push as hard as I can. There are several contractions where I feel like I have to push 4 or 5 times in a row. I started out pushing on my hands and knees and was LOVING it…until I hear a soft click click in the background and realize Lynsey is taking pictures. In my head I’m thinking, THIS is not my best angle and I don’t really want my birth slideshow to have an up close and personal to my derrière, so I hurry up and flip around so my pictures won’t be ruined. Looking back I have no clue how I was worrying about pictures at this point but I’m glad I was so you will be saved from seeing your Mommy’s tush swaying in the breeze!
I’ve been pushing for a while now and look around and ask no one in particular if they are sure I’m going to have this baby today or if it could be the next day…everyone said definitely today, but to me it felt like pushing you out was taking a crazy long time. Don’t get me wrong, I welcomed the pushing in comparison to the contractions…they were like a breath of fresh air. I also remember asking how in the world my friend Rachel, who just birthed Ezra a few weeks earlier, pushed for only 20 minutes and then had the baby?! It seemed impossible to me that it was that quick whereas I was going on about an hour and a half so far with you. A short while later Donnellynn tells me my water just broke…I didn’t feel a thing so I just kept going about my business trying to birth you. You were getting closer and closer to being here and Sue started to hold a mirror under water so your Daddy (who was helping hold me up behind me) could see the head start to come out. It happened very slowly in stages and when the time came to where I could feel the top of your head and hair I reached down and touched you for the first time. This is it, I tell myself. I’m about to be a Mommy to a little baby boy or girl. The feeling inside me is indescribable. I’m so looking forward to meeting you. Your head is coming out more and more with each push and I feel the “ring of fire” coming on when you are crowning. Even in that moment my head is extremely clear and I remember thinking that a couple of weeks before your Daddy and I joked that when I was crowning we’d start singing “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash.
I was also surprised that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everyone says it burns really bad and is extremely painful but it was just a little uncomfortable, especially since I knew in a couple of more pushes you’d be in my arms. Your Daddy went around to the other side of the pool to catch you when you came out and after the next big push I look down to see your head delivered. I was in awe. Donnellyn told me to breathe a few quick short breaths before I pushed again. The next push came and your shoulders and body slid from me into your Daddy’s waiting arms. It was a beautiful sight. The time was 7:18pm. Your Daddy held you under water for about 20 seconds to let you get accustomed to being outside my womb and then lifted you up and put you in my arms. I brought you to my chest and you pushed off of it and looked me in the eyes. My head falls back and I have the biggest grin on my face from seeing your precious little face and looking at how alert you are. You knew I was your mommy and we just worked together for 19 hours so we could meet and you pushing off of my chest to look me in my eyes was the perfect ending to such a long birth process.
I hear the midwives ask your Daddy what the sex of the baby was and listen to his reply “I don’t know, I didn’t look.” He was so excited to have you here he forgot to see what you were. So I then flip you over and the midwives announce “It’s a BOY!!” I knew you were a boy all along so it was no big surprise to me, but looking up and seeing the emotion on your Daddy’s face made me realize there are now 2 boys in this world that I can’t live without. Your Daddy is an amazing man. He was with me the entire time encouraging me and helping me bring you into the world. You are so lucky to have a Daddy like him.
I then get out of the pool with you so we can deliver my placenta which when I stood up I already felt bulging out. So I got into the bed and in 2 pushes the placenta was out (12 minutes after I had you) and I was officially unpregnant. As the midwives are getting the herbal bath ready your Daddy and I get to know you a little better and your Daddy cuts your umbilical cord. You are making some of the cutest faces already. You came out really wrinkly and kind of looked like an old man. You didn’t have any vernix left on you and your skin was peeling off your body especially your hands and feet. I asked Sue how my placenta looked because you can tell how healthy a mom was throughout her pregnancy by the look of the placenta and I wanted to make sure mine was good. She said it actually looked like it had a little calcification in it which that mixed with how wrinkly you were told us that we more then likely had our “due date” wrong and you were probably about 2 weeks “past due.”
You and I go and get in our herbal bath while Lynsey takes some more pictures of you. At this point I hold have you floating in the water and I look down and exclaim “Oh my goodness, his balls are HUGE!!” This got a laugh out of everyone from the birth team and Donnellyn said it was normal for your testicles to be a little swollen right after birth. We finished up our herbal bath and went back out to have you measured and weighed. You were 8 pounds 15 ounces and 21 and a half inches long. Your head and chest were 14 and a half inches around. No wonder it took me 2 hours and 5 minutes to push you out…you got your Dad’s big peanut head!! After all the measurements and reflexes were tested your Daddy put your first diaper on and dressed you in the clothes we had laid out. Sue went through all of our post pregnancy information and the midwives cleaned up and we all said a prayer together and then they left and it was just you, me and Daddy ready to start our lives together as a family of three.
Looking back now, (you are 1 month old as I write this) I wouldn’t have changed a thing. The whole experience…from pregnancy thru the actual birth was absolutely amazing and unforgettable. Knowing that you came on your own terms and when you were ready and that you were just as much of an active participant in the birth as I was and getting to have you at home in our bedroom was the perfect birth experience. Your Daddy and I love you so much Addox, and I hope one day when you read this it will be just as special to you as it was for me to write it and experience it.
Love,
MommyDr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-61144221460897305272010-08-30T10:30:00.000-07:002010-08-30T10:33:58.341-07:00Why do kids need Chiropractic?!Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-57379584339846862362010-08-30T09:48:00.000-07:002010-08-30T09:48:36.900-07:00A ChiropracTIC Miracle Story!Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-891808896388785522010-07-17T08:40:00.000-07:002010-07-17T10:49:31.358-07:00The Truth About Chiropractic by Lloyd Fielder, D.C.I am a Chiropractor. When I tell people what I do for a living, the most frequent response is that the person I'm speaking to grabs his back and says, "Oh, Doc, I need ya!" As a society, we misunderstand chiropractic. But with you permission, I would like to tell you the truth about it, and what a true gift it is.

A great philosopher named Hippocrates once stated, "We are either growing or dying." Not to be outdone, Confucius stated, "Our lives are like that of an egg, we are either growing or decaying." Every day, our environment bombards us with chemical, physical and mental stressors. It is the job of our nervous system to detect these stressors, interpret them, and either adapt to them and continue our growth, or shrink from them and stop growing while in a survival or protective mode.

As the philosophers said, we are both growing and dying each day-but one process will predominate over the other. One is an upward spiral of growth, leading to fulfillment and ease; the other is a downward spiral of decay, leading to death.

Our Bodies' Innate Intelligence

Our bodies have an inborn intelligence, often called innate intelligence. This intelligence runs, regulates, heals and grows the body to it fullest potential, allowing us to reach our God-given purpose in life. There are many things you have to accept in order to understand the full breadth of chiropractic: Either we are on this earth due to the grace of a higher consciousness, or we are simply a random assimilation of organic substance that has evolved over many years, making us nothing more than a higher order of mud.

If you have a live person and a dead person side by side, what is the difference? They both have all the same stuff, the same potential for life. In chiropractic understanding, the difference is that the live one possesses an innate intelligence, or life force. Most people think the body is run and regulated by the brain, but let me ask you: What runs the brain? There are those who think genes dictate life, but we know that they turn off and on regularly, even mutating and adapting. So I ask: What turns the genes on or off?

For a hundred years, chiropractors have been saying that there is a perfect, inborn intelligence inside us that continually gives 100 percent of the information we need to run, regulate, grow, heal and flourish. Ill health, disease and lack of potential arise only from a lack of expression of this intelligence.

The Expression of Light or Darkness

This lack of expression leads to dis-coordination of the body, or a lack of a body's ability to comprehend itself in its own environment. That leads to an inability of the body to adapt to outside stressors, which causes a loss of function and a breakdown of tissue-a downward spiral of decay and, ultimately, death.

If we look at the full expression of this innate intelligence as being the fullest expression of life as light, we can look at the lack of this expression- decay or disease- as darkness, examine it, qualify it, be aware of it and focus on it. But there's only one way to remove darkness: Add light.

Chiropractic understands this premise. It doesn't look to cure disease, address disease or diagnose disease. We understand disease for what it truly is- a lack state, one that arises only in the absence of the fullest expression of life.

The Subluxation Process

Chiropractic detects and corrects interference with the expression of this intelligence in relation to the spine. Our nerve system is what conducts the expression of this innate intelligence. Since our spinal cords are surrounded and protected by vertebrae, chiropractors became synonymous with backs. In truth, chiropractic deals with the innate intelligence and the nervous system. A chiropractor is not a doctor of the spine, especially not spinal disorders, decay or disease.

As a chiropractor, the only conclusion that I can make with and degree of certainty is that your body is better off with a clear nerve system than one with interference. Chiropractors are the only practitioners with the philosophy and the technique to find that interference-called subluxation- and to assist in correcting it.

Allopathic practitioners (i.e. mainstream medical doctors) usually regard us as "not whole," and needing something outside ourselves to heal or grow. They assume that it takes an outside intelligence to look at us and tell us what we need, be it ultrasound, electrical stimulation, pharmaceuticals, supplements or something else.

We need to go back to our original thought process and ask: If a practitioner directs the energy where he thinks it needs to go, how does that honor an individuals innate intelligence? Doesn't innate intelligence know what is needed where, and how much? How does applying ultrasound to the mid-back honor that process?

In our society, sitting for five minutes in a drive-through can seem like an eternity. Commercials bombard us five to seven times in three minutes, and we can see problems get resolved in three eight-minute segments on TV. It can be challenging to shift our consciousness from that fast-paced lifestyle to comprehend that all of life, including healing, is a process, and that being under care is also a lifetime process.

Ask yourself: If you start to exercise because it's good for you, when do you get to a point when you can stop? What about brushing your teeth, or eating vegetables and other healthy foods? You can always choose to stop doing those things, but that's not congruent with the fullest expression of your life's potential.

The Effects of Interference

So chiropractic care is a process that gives its greatest rewards over a lifetime. It starts with your getting checked to see how much the subluxation process is interfering with your nerve system and you life. We usually think we feel fine, but symptoms are the last thing to show up in a process, and therefore the worst possible way to judge your life's expression.

We all know someone, or have heard of someone, who has dropped dead from a heart attack without warning. Or perhaps you know someone who got a routine check-up and discovered they had a 99 percent blockage in their coronary arteries and needed immediate open-heart surgery. There might have been no outward signs, yet we know that cardiovascular disease is a process that occurs over decades.

Similarly, diabetes is said to be at epidemic proportions, mostly due to there being no obvious signs until the process has gone rampant for years. Even a smaller systemic problem, such as tooth decay, occurs for years before you feel any pain or sensitivity.

These things are all just examples of processes that are a function of our fundamental disconnect with the understanding of life and health. We are out of touch with ourselves. To live, it is not enough just not to die, or to be alive with no symptoms and never need surgery. I don't believe that's why God put us here on this planet.

Flourish and Grow

I believe we all have a purpose. We are all meant to flourish, grow and reach our optimum potential. You see, you cannot be in fear and love at the same time; you cannot be in survival mode and grow at the same time. I know we are meant to live in love and growth, and honor the gift of grace, always.

To me, it is impossible to accomplish this with a nerve system that is compromised-one that disconnects the creator from the creation and allows a little less life in us each and every day. So, from a person who has searched as a chiropractor for the meaning of our profession for the last 10 years- a person who has seen thousands of patients, read hundreds of books and listened to dozens of tapes and lectures-please get checked.

Get checked for the subluxation process. Get your families checked, and your friends, your loved ones and anyone you care about. Even mention it to the people you don't care about, as maybe it's the subluxation process that's preventing them from their fullest expression of love and happiness. You never know: With a clear nervous system, anything becomes possible.Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-77922447422010317852010-07-16T08:52:00.000-07:002010-07-16T14:47:30.014-07:00Shift Your ConsciousnessWhy as a society do we tend to wait around until we "feel bad" or are "sick" to do anything about our health. To me, that is focusing more on the disease state of living rather than health and vitality of life. Wouldn't you rather feel great all the time? What's stopping you?

I'll tell you a little about myself. I feel awesome. Not just today, or some of the time...ALL THE TIME. How many people can say that? I haven't been "sick" in over 2 years. And when I say sick I'm not just talking about getting common infections such as the flu, cold, etc. I'm talking about any symptom of a medical condition such as: headaches, allergies, sore throats, a cough, all the little nuisances that most people think are a "normal" part of everyday life. Who doesn't get a headache once in a while, right? Not me. I've had to deal with none of the above. Nada. Zip. How is that? How can one person go for such a long time without having a symptom of any kind, while the person standing in front of them at a grocery store is constantly battleing some kind of illness or another. What's the difference between these two people. They're both the same age, body type, race, gender, they live in the same city, are exposed to the same "germs." Why does one get to be healthy, and the other is doomed to be sick? Luck? Good fortune?

NO.

The difference is, one of these people, is proactive about their HEALTH. I want to keep my body functioning to the best of its ability ALL the time, not just when I'm not feeling well. And how do I do that? Well, exercise and nutrition definetely play a role in living a healthy lifestyle...but I also CHOOSE to go beyond that and incorporate Chiropractic in my life. I get adjusted twice a week to ensure that my nervous system (which controls all aspects of your body) is functioning at its optimal potential. My immune system is stronger and more resilient, my body is producing the proper amounts of hormones and chemicals my body needs for breaking down food and reducing stress. My brain is able to communicate with all the organs and tissues in my body where before the Chiropractic adjustment took place it couldn't. There was an interference keeping the brain from communicating properly with the rest of my body.

Unfortunetely, the majority of society doesn't fully understand the role of Chiropractic and how huge a role it plays in proper body function and health. They are still stuck on Chiropractic care being just for those people with bad backs, or pain in the neck, or some other type symptom of a medical condition. Get this people- CHIROPRACTIC ISN'T FOR BACK PAIN, NECK PAIN OR HEADACHES!! Or any other symptom for that matter! Chiropractic is about enhancing your life potential allowing your body to heal itself from above-down-and inside out. Do people recieve relief from their aches and pains thru Chiropractic care? YES! But that is not our goal as Chiropractors...we do not treat symptoms or disease, nor do we diagnose disease. As a vitalistic Chiropractor my one and only goal is to remove any subluxation in your spine that is keeping your body from performing as it should.

That is one of the major purposes of this blog...to inform you about Chiropractic and things related to Chiropractic that can help YOU live a healthier lifestyle. I would like there to be a shift in consciousness focusing more on proactive health care rather than sickness and disease care. The first step is learning more about how Chiropractic can help improve your quality of life. Call your local Chiropractor and ask if you can learn more about how removing your subluxations can improve your body's overall function. Let's stop relying on outside-in forces like the thousands of prescription medications and over the counter drugs, and start finding out how to heal ourselves from within without having to rely on synthetic chemicals. BE PROACTIVE, GET ADJUSTED TODAY, GET ADJUSTED FOR LIFE! Get well and stay well thru Chiropractic.Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838574157948159888.post-22201588979910204062010-07-14T10:19:00.001-07:002010-07-15T17:45:56.743-07:00The Story of "That Something"Then Randolph turned to me.
"Man, write that story you've told us. Write it so that every man may read. Send that message out into the world. If men will read that story, read and re-read, until it is written on their memories, if men will believe the message you bring, and then if they will but awaken that something within their souls that now lies asleep--I say if you can make men do this, you will have done more for mankind than any man or any thousand men have done in many, many years. Write it, man, write it."
And so it has been written.
____________________

This happened a long, long time ago. I never see a man limp without thinking of that day. The sky wept. No rift of brighter color broke the drabness of it. I thought the universe wept. That was my outlook. The very times were in misery. Men were out of work. I was one of them.

I had slept the night before on the cold, cement floor of the city's jail. I slept as a tired dog sleeps, a dog worn out with a fruitless chase. All of the night before, I had walked, walked, walked--my pride keeping me from this place. And so the day had found me walking, aimlessly, looking only for food, shelter, and work. This could not last forever, so that night I had stumbled down the low, narrow hallway of the jail, and been let into a barred cell with a hundred others. And there I had lain as one dead, on the cold, hard floor.

But it is of the day that followed that night in jail that you shall hear. For that was the day of my life. It was then I found "That Something."

My feet were very tired. My soul wept with the sky. I stood, as in a wilderness alone, on the corner of a great thoroughfare in a great city. And then a man stopped by my side. He was of my height and build. I caught a glimpse of his face. I thought that this man might have been myself, if...

But my present need drove out reflections. I laid my hand on his arm. "I am hungry, " I said simply. He turned slowly and looked at me. First his gaze took in every detail of the outer man, from my water-soaked cap to my poor, cracked shoes. And then, through the eyes, he seemed to search my soul.

I stood there ashamed. I laugh when I think of that now, but it was different then.
"Well," he said presently, "suppose you were fed. What then?" I shifted my weight from one tired foot to the other. "I'd try to get a job somewhere," I muttered after a moment. "You'd try?" he asked. "Yes, try," I answered, "although there is little chance. Nobody wants men now. I'll try sir. But I don't care for that now-its food I want. I'm hungry. Can you help me?"

"No," he answered, a note of pity in his voice. "I cannot help you. No man can." "But you could feed me, " I said, with some petulance in my voice.

"It is not food you need!" "What then?" I asked. "That something," was his reply.
A man joined him. They began talking of matters of mutual interest. I was shuffling away through the drizzling, miserable rain, when he called me back and handed me his card. "Man, go find "That Something," he said, "and when you've found it, come to me." "Come to you for what?" I asked. "To thank me," was his answer, and he and his friend passed on.
____________________

There were two words that stuck in my memory. "That Something!" I fell to wondering. I turned into a pool room, and found a seat. I sat there thinking. The balls on the tables before me clicked nickels away from men who could ill afford the pleasures of the place. I sat there a long, long time. There was nowhere else to go. Ahead of me I saw another night in jail. Yet the day seemed longer than the night. It was warm in there. The hum of voices, the regular click, click, click of ivory, the occasional thumping of cue on marble floor--all this in time developed into a dull chorus of monotony. And then I fell asleep.

I believe in God. I believe in miracles. I believe in visions as well. But it is only natural that I should have dreamed of "That Something"-- so perhaps it was neither miracle nor vision. You will think it a foolish dream; yet it changed my life. That's reason enough for the telling. You may laugh at it scornfully; then my dream will do you no good. You may see in it what I saw; then you will take your place with the masters of men.

This was my dream: I dreamed that I awoke! That is the most wonderful part of the dream; for in my dream I realized that I had been asleep a long, long sleep from the very beginning of things--and I saw myself, there in the pool room, asleep. Then I saw myself start, my eyes opened, and I dreamed that I saw.

"What awakened me?" I asked in my dream. "You awakened yourself, " answered a voice nearby. I turned about, but no one was near. "Who are you?" I asked. "I am "That Something," came the reply. "But where are you?" "I am hidden in your soul."

For some moments I thought over what was said. Then I stammered, "How- how did you get there?" "I was born there." "Why have I not known you were there before?" "No man knows it," answered the voice, "until he awakes." "Are you in other men's souls as well?" "There is "That Something" in every man's soul, which can move mountains or dry the seas." "Then you must be Faith!" "Yes," came the answer, "I am Faith, but I am more--I am that which makes men face the fires of hell, and win." "Then you must be Confidence, as well." "Yes, I am more than Confidence-- I am that which makes the babbling brooks lift worlds upon their wavelets." "You are power," I cried. "Yes, I am more than Power," answered the voice. I am that which makes the wretched failure life up himself and rule the world." "You are Ambition--I know you now." "Yes, I am all you say- Faith, Confidence, Power, Ambition, and more. For greater than all is "That Something." I am that which every man must find in his soul or else he will be but a clutterer of the earth on which he lives.

"But how can man find you?" "Even as you are finding me now. First you must awaken, then seek, and when you have found you must learn to control..." "Control what?" I asked confused. "That Something"... borrow it from you soul and baptize your life with it. Anoint your eyes, that you may see; anoint your ears, that you may hear; anoint your heart, that you may be!"

"But tell me," I cried frantically, for the voice was trailing off to almost nothing, "how can I do this? How? How?" "This is the secret," came the voice to me as the whisper of a gentle breeze, "these words-- 'I will'."

And then I woke with a start. A man was shaking me roughly. "Clear out of here! We aint running no free rooming house for bums. If you want to sleep, take a sleeper, but get out of here." "I will," I answered unthinkingly, as I turned towards the door. "I will."

My words brought back the dream vividly. I stood in the doorway, peering out into the rain. A boy with a dozen bundles stopped near me to shift his load. "I'll help you, son," I said and laughed gladly as I took half his load and started with him down the street. "Gee, mister, dat's pretty square of you, all right. How far are you going this way?" "Where are you taking these things?" I asked. He told me. "Why, that's right where I'm going," I answered in mock surprise. And so we hurried on our way.

It was then the clouds overhead began to break. Before we had gone half way, the sun peeped out and the boy laughed with the pure delight of it. "By golly, mister, she's going to be some handsome day tomorrow, ain't it?" "I will," I answered absently. He looked up at me, startled by my answer, started to ask a question, thought better of it, and, giving me another queer look, trudged on in silence.

When he had delivered his packages, he turned back towards the thoroughfare; and he asked me, with the innocent impertinence of boyhood: "Say, mister, where do you work?" "Why, I'm working for you right now. It's good to work, don't you think?" "But ain't you got no steady job?" "Yes," I answered firmly, "I will." Again he cast a queer look and quickened his pace.

We went together to the store at which he worked. It was the largest in the city. We hurried through a doorway at the rear, and I found myself in a large room. A man stepped up to me and asked what I wanted. "I have come here to work." "What department? Who sent you?"

There were many men in there, packing boxes. Before I could answer his question, someone called him and he hurried away. I took off my coat, hung it on a nail, and started to work, following the example of those near me. A half hour later, the man who first accosted me passed. "Oh," he said, "so they put you at it while I was gone, did they?" "I'm doing my best, sir," I answered as I drove a nail with a bang.

And so I worked until six o'clock. The sun was very bright outside. When the six o'clock bell rang, the men began filing by the clock. "What about the clock?" I asked the man in charge. "Didn't they give you a number?" "No." Then I told him my name, he gave me a number, and I punched out. The boy was waiting for me at the door. "How'd you get the job?" he asked curiously. "That was secured for me before I showed up there." "Who got it for you?" "That Something," was my answer. "Aw, quit stringing me. How'd you get on? I seen a dozen men trying to get in on that work this morning and they was all turned down." "But," i explained with a smile, "they had never found "That Something." He again favored me with a queer look.

"Where do you live?" he asked finally. "I am going to find a place now." "Well, my maw keeps a boarding house-why don't you come up to my place?" There was but one other boarder. He was a professor of a number of ology branches at a nearby denominational college. He was a little man, with unreasonable hair on his face and very little on his head. He wore thick glasses perched on a beaked nose. His eyes were small and black like shoe buttons. He watched me as I ate. When the meal was finished, he invited me to sit with him in his room.

"I hope you don't mind my prying," said he, "but I have been trying to figure you out." "Yes?" "I have come to the conclusion that you are a student of sociology." I laughed. "Bobby tells us you are packing boxes down at his store." I nodded assent. "Then of course it is for the study of the conditions of the working masses that you are down there." "Yes," I admitted, "I am very much interested in conditions of the masses right now." "Then you can help me; I am writing a series of papers on that very subject. Will you answer me this, please. What is it that keeps the underdog down? What is it that the upper ten possess that the under ten thousand do not have?" "Why, it's "That Something," I answered. "What do you mean? Education? Environment?"

Before my mind was flashed the picture of my boyhood. I saw my room on the top floor of a city block building. I saw myself sleeping in drygoods boxes in alleys, and by the boilers in boats on the river. Yes, I was an alleycat and a wharf-rat. I saw myself placed at the mercy of five step-mothers and a father engrossed in his science. I saw myself working, gaining little or no schooling-. And then, in the twinkling of an eye, the scene changed and I saw that awful room, with a hundred men lying around me on the cold, hard floor.

"No," I answered thoughtfully, "it is neither of those things. "That Something" is entirely different. I don't know just what it is, but I am going to find it, pin it down, and then I will tell you more of it." As I looked into his face, I noticed the same puzzled expression the boy had worn. So, by mutual consent, the subject was changed and we talked of trivial things. For a week or more, I packed boxes and drove nails. I was a good packer. I made "That Something" work with me all the time.
_________________________

One day, I noticed the shipping clerk had more work than he could handle. There were idle men in the department. They could do nothing until he checked up to them. I laid down my hammer, walked over to where he stood, and said "I am to help you this afternoon." He looked up with a start. "Oh," he exclaimed. "Well, that's good. I'm glad they have sense enough to give me somebody to help out, at last." He handed me a bunch of papers and made room for me at the desk.

The superintendent of the department was out of the room at the time. Presently he returned and glanced at me curiously. "So, they've got you helping Dickey?" he said. I shrugged my shoulders without looking up, and continued figuring. When I left the room that night, the superintendent of the department joined me. "Say," he said, "I never did get onto how you were put in there. What's the idea? Working through to learn the business?" "Yes," I answered with confidence, "just that. I am to learn every detail of it." "I thought something of the kind. To which one of them are you related?" "I do not think it wise to discuss that at this time," was my answer. "Oh sure," he hastened to say, "I don't mean to be inquisitive. Anything I can do to help you, let me know." And then he left me.

The shipping clerk was a bright young fellow. I liked him, and he liked me. One day, shortly after I had received my first raise in wages, he came to me with a problem. That night I stayed down with him and we worked it out together. We soon got in the habit of staying down one night each week, working over his systems. He lacked originality. I helped him. He had been doing things just like the fellow before him. The business had been growing rapidly-practically doubled. We worked out an improved system. We drew up forms; planned out every detail. One day he carried our plans to the man in authority. There came up a question which the shipping clerk did not quite understand, so they sent for me. My approach was far different from that of the sniveling beggar who had asked the man on the street corner for food.

The man in authority looked at me in surprise. "Who are you?" I handed him my card. "You are packing boxes?" he asked in surprise. "I am in the packing room- temporarily." Then he went over the shipping clerk's plans in detail. "I think they're all right. I'll have these forms sent to the printer in the morning." said the man in authority. As we turned to leave the office, he called me back. "How long have you been in the packing rooms?" "Sixty-three days," I answered. "You've been there long enough. There is nothing more for you to learn there, is there?" "No." He studied me for a while in silence. "Funny neither of them has said anything about you." he said at length, speaking half to himself. "I suppose the old man's idea was for you to work out your own salvation-is that it?" "In a way," I replied. "What any man accomplishes must eventually come from "That Something" within him.

He pondered this for a moment. Then he scrawled a few words on a piece of paper. "Hand that to Perkins in the Auditing Department tomorrow morning and we'll see how you show up there." I thanked him and turned to leave the room. "And say," calling me back; "better forget about my having said anything about your relations with the old man. After all, you see, it's none of my business." "Certainly," I answered, and left the room. Three months later, I left Bob's mother's boarding house. It hurt me to do this. She had been almost a mother to me. There was a home life about the place which I had learned to love. Even the little hairy Ology Professor and his fanciful theories had become dear to me. But "That Something" demanded that I move on. So I moved on up the hill.

I arranged for a room at a quiet boarding house. It was at the suggestion of the man in authority that I chose his boarding house. So we became acquaintances, then friends; and never once did the man in authority mention the fact that I was "learning the business."
_______________________
And so a year rolled 'round. It was the time Perkins took his vacation. I was given the place until he returned. One day the old man came into the office. He looked at me keenly. Soon the man in authority came in; the old man called him aside. I overheard a portion of their conversation. "Who's the man at Perkin's desk?" the old man asked. The man in authority mentioned my name. "Funny I never heard of him before." The man in authority gasped. The rest was spoken in guarded tones, and I heard no word further.

That night, the man in authority came into my sitting room. "Say," he began, "you've certainly got me locoed or something of the sort. I have been figuring you out all along as a ward or a long lost cousin of the old man. Now, today he comes in and jumps on me about putting you in this place of responsibility without first knowing all about you. Of course, I know you're all right but, by Jupiter, I'm placed in a deucedly unholy kind of light."

"What's all the trouble?" I asked. "My work going wrong?" "I should say not; but that's aside from the question. What's got me going is how the dickens you did it. How you got to hold down the most resposible job on the works without anybody knowing just what you really are. Tell me about yourself, will you?" "I was born of poor but honest parents in a small coal-mining town of What Cheer, Iowa, in the year 1881. My father peddled fish in a wheel-barrow; my mother died when I was one-half years old-". "Oh, cut that bunk. Tell me to whom you are related, or who is backing you up. It's pull that counts these days. Who gave you your start with the company?"
____________________________

I leaned back in my leather Morris chair. Memory brought back the picture of that drab day of just one year before. And that brought to my mind the card that had been given me. I had not thought of it before until that minute. I arose, went to a closet where hung the very suit I had worn on that very eventful day. I had kept it as a souvenir of my awakening. As I had hoped, the card was in a pocket of the shabby vest. For the first time, I read the name engraved thereon:
MATTHEW MORRISON RANDOLPH
BONDS

I handed the card to the man in authority. He read it with wandering eyes. Now, Randolph was the silent partner of the business. Impossible coincidence? You may think so. I know men who believe success is impossible. And to them, success is impossible. And so perhaps you believe this impossible. But I tell you it as it happened.

"Funny Randolph never mentioned your name to the old man. Anyway, I wish I'd known this when he was talking about you today." "I'm glad you didn't," I answered with a short laugh. "Why?" he asked puzzled. "Go there to the phone and call up Randolph. I think he'll tell you why." "But-" he began. "Go on and call him up. I want you to," I insisted. In a moment, Randolph was on the line.

"Ask him," I insisted. The man in authority did so. I watched the changing expressions on his face. "You-say-you-never-heard-of-the-man!" gasped the man in authority. "Why, he's holding down the most responsible job on the place."
"Better let me talk to Mr. Randolph," I interrupted. His hand was trembling as he surrendered the phone. "Mr. Randolph," I said, "I know you do not remember my name, for I am quite sure you have never heard it. You may remember, however, one miserable day a year ago when a beggar asked you for food."

"Well, go on," came a crisp voice over the phone. "You may also remember telling that beggar that it was not food he needed- it was "That Something," and that alone. Well, Mr. Randolph, I am the beggar to whom you spoke and I have found "That Something." I have learned to use it, and I want to thank you for having shown me the way. When may I have the oppurtunity of telling you about it?"

An hour later the story you have just heard was told to a strange trio: the man in authority, the professor of ologies, and Matthew Morrison Randolph. From time to time, as I told the tale, Randolph nodded his head in approval and I noticed a strange light begin to glow in the little professor's eyes. When I had finished, we sat for a long time in silence, broken at last by Randolph, who said:
"And now tell me just what you think "That Something" really is?"

I shook my head in dismay. "You folks know as much as I do about it," I answered. "But of this one thing I am convinced, through and through. It is real human power, as truly real as the commercial electrical current. It is the power of the inner man, the fuel of the soul machine. It is the one thing necessary. Until we awaken "That Something" of the soul, we bear on our muscles those who have found "That Something." And we bear them on up the mountain to take their places among the masters of men. "That Something" likes dormant in every soul until aroused. With many, it sleeps until the last great sleep. Sometimes it does not wake until man stands tottering on the border of the grave. Sometimes it is found by the child playing by its mother's knee. A man's success depends alone on "That Something." "That Something" of his soul. Abraham Lincoln found it when a lad. It warmed the cold floor on which he lay and studied. It added light to the flickering glow of the wood fire, that he might see to read. It spurred him on, and on, and on. "That Something" is an awful force. It made of a puny Corsican the ruler of the world! It made of a thin-chested bookkeeper the money king of a great country! It made Edison the great man of his age! It made Carnegie! It made Woodrow Wilson! It made Roosevelt! It can make you! It is now in your soul! Awaken it-now! "That Something."

Again the silence followed. I watched the professor of many ologies. I saw the kindled fires in his eyes gradually die out. He shook his head wearily. "No, it can't be done; it can't be done," he murmured. "I have drunk deeply of the cup of life and I am now drinking the dregs. The cup is filled but once, and when it is gone there's nothing left but the dregs of old age and poverty."

"You fool," cried Randolph, leaning forward and shaking the little man roughly. "You almost had "That Something" in you power, and now you sing it back to sleep with your silly song of pessimism. It's the false philopsophy, which such as you sing, which has kept men in the ruts of thier own digging for centuries past. Wake, man, wake! Wake "That Something" within your soul!"

The two men sat looking deeply into each other's eyes. It was the little man who broke the silence. "Thank you, Randolph," he said quietly. "You are right. I will."

Then Randolph turned to me.
"Man, write that story you've told us. Write it so that every man may read. Send that message out into the world. If men will read that story, read and reread, until it is written on their memories; if men will believe the message you bring, and then if they will but awaken that something withing their souls that now lies asleep-I say if you can make men do this, you will have done more for mankind than any man or any thousand men have done in many, many years. Write it, man, write it word for word as you have told it here, so every man may read. Write it, man, write it!"

And so it has been written.

You who have heard it through, I pray that you may hear it every word again and again until "That Something" of your souls has been aroused, and you have taken your places among the rulers of the world.

The end, which is the beginning.Dr. Rachel Whaleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08767252182281544048noreply@blogger.com0
